So during Orientation you got to see campus with your group, your leaders will have given you tips and shortcuts about getting around campus, good study spots, and where to locate your classes. Now it’s the first week of class. Time to meet the folks you’ll be spending the next four (or more) years with! This week is set up specifically for the first years to have a chance to meet new friends in the same year, or upper years to help mentor you and see you succeed in your degree. The goal of the week is to have a little fun and welcome you to Schulich, before the stress and busyness of the semester kick in to high gear. You should be able to attend most of the events, they are organized for the FROSH after all! See you there!

Tap the Town
BBQ will be a carnival style set up this year. The goal is to keep people around interacting with each other instead of just grabbing food and taking off. We will gather in front of the engg building around 10:30, parade starting around 11 (the Dean gave his approval last year so for the record, YES parade is happening). We will go be loud around campus and end at Haskayne. Then head back where burgers and refreshments will be ready to go.
With BBQ this year the goal is to have people hangout for the afternoon, meet upper years and fellow classmates. So instead of just grabbing food and taking off, there will be games. One of the things will be parachute games #nostalgia. A parachute will be there. Play games, meet upper years and mingle with your fellow first years, have fun!
We’ll be hitting up the lounge Monday evening to watch an awesome movie on the projector. Everyone is welcome. Come hang out and watch a silver screen classic with your engg friends. Movie to be determined. Votes will be taken on Monday. (If all else fails we will venture to the Archives for old ENGG week movies!)
Clubs Fair/Slice with Advice
So this year the clubs fair won’t take place after Faculty Orientation, that is being cut from Oweek, so ESS will be taking on the set up of the event. We are going to combine it with “Slice with Advice” as a way for students to come see all of the awesome clubs that Schulich has to offer! There will be pizza for those who attend and the goal is to help introduce students to the more exciting aspects of Engineering at U of C. Also to meet upper year friends who can be a valuable resource moving through your degree.
The manager at Knoxville’s has been nice enough to offer us a night at his establishment, we will head there early for before opening. Arcade style games will be set up, come have some fun and get to know each other outside of the campus environment. Meet your class mates, meet upper years. Everyone is invited, admission is free! Oh and did I mention that the first leg of transportation (the ride there) is covered!
This event was not run last year due to timing conflicts. Will be during the day, one maybe two times during the week depending on turnout. “Soccer” played with a giant ball and no kicking, hit the ball with two hands. There is a ref, try and score goals. Pretty easy right?
Another self explanatory event, we are going to play dodgeball. Last year we held a tournament and involved a few teams from business. Likely will have similar structure this year. Last time it came down to the first year teams and they won it for us! Fingers crossed that Schulich comes out on top again!
A FROSH week tradition, don’t be fooled by the name. That time blocked off in the evening on the FROSH week schedule is really an event. This is run by alum, it is a fantastic way to meet upper years, first years, and even those who made it through engg alive! Have a chance to relax with your peers and have some fun after a long day at school. A road race style event, there will be puzzles to solve to find each location along the way. Everyone is welcome for the night at the final stop.
This is an oldie. It died out for a while during the renovations of the engg building, and we couldn’t do it last year because even the upper years had no idea where things were in building once it opened! The goal of the event is to tour the first years around the new building...except we don’t give tours. We give them different locations to find (most likely homerooms), and did I mention they have to avoid getting caught by upper years?
A fun amazing race style game to help the first years find their way around the new building, so when they come Monday after FROSH week, they might know where to find things after only 2 attempts instead of 4!
Another frosh week tradition, each block will be assigned to a group of upper years who has created a chariot to be raced. This chariot will be towed by the upper years (with FROSH as drivers) around the loop in the Engg Quad and through a rain of water balloons and other fun projectiles. We plan to run the race in heats, the goal is simple, win the race!
Raid the Den
Not really and ESS event, we will all be heading to the den for the first Thursden of the year, anyone is welcome to join
Beakerhead Keynote and Demo
As a collaboration with Beakerhead, the Schulich School of Engineering will be hosting guest speaker and the chief mechanical engineer of Flaming Lotus Girls, Michael Prados. There will be a lecture held for students in MacHall, its an awesome chance to learn about possible applications of your degree!
The title pretty much explains this one, the event is week long, and it will be composed almost entirely photo/video items to obtain. There will be minimal need to acquire physical items and almost everything can be done on campus. Not releasing the list until FROSH week though — Sorry no head starts!
Tap the Town
The last hurrah to FROSH week, its Friday night. There will be buses to make sure everyone get to and from the event safely. Location is TBD, the intent is to celebrate the start of the school year!
Okay just kidding, its our last night of freedom and summer before we actually need to focus on our studies. Come out for a good night with all the friends you made this week!
