The Gateway Presents and Welcomes Back: Busty and the Bass with Schwey and Pierre Kwenders live on March 9th!

BUSTY AND THE BASS bustyandthebass.com/

With their seamless blend of soulful hip hop vocals, rap, signature brass and synths, Busty and the Bass is ushering in a new era of genre-defying sound. After meeting in their first week of the McGill University jazz program, the Montreal-based nine-piece quickly shot up from from packed house party jams to scorching live performances in front of thousands of fans across the US, Canada, Europe and the UK.

The new album builds on a smooth foundational sound reminiscent of artists like Parliament, Earth, Wind and Fire, and Michael Jackson, weaving in the contemporary influence of Kendrick Lamar, D’Angelo, and James Blake. Each song on “Uncommon Good” feels like a single, from the brassy disco groove of “Up Top” to the Outkast-esque “Memories and Melodies” and the sensual, lyrical flow of “Common Ground.” The album synthesizes a swirling mixture of funk, soul, rock, hip-hop, dance music, and gospel that is layered, polished, and unified.

Busty’s natural chemistry and high-energy live show have made them an instant favorite with audiences around the world. Whether it’s your first Busty experience, or you know every time the cowbell comes in — you’re gonna dance.

SCHWEY facebook.com/schweyluv/
In pursuit of the most electrifying show possible, the band throws all confines of genre out the window: funk influences meld with with modern pop, and R&B fuses with swaggering hip-hop and surging indie rock. Dobbs’ playful, velvetvoiced hooks provide the focal point for earworm dance tracks, while Schwinghammer adds sonic richness with his jazz-trained keys. Whether picking up the party with a G-funk banger or slowing things down with a sexy soul ballad,
their focus never changes: “It’s all about groove,” Dobbs says. “We didn’t choose the genre. We just started playing music and it naturally turned out like that.”

PIERRE KWENDERS pierrekwenders.com/
Afro-Canadian singer/songwriter Pierre Kwenders’ music is a response to a world that so often asks people who fit comfortably in multiple boxes to pick only one. While Pierre’s music ranges from icy R&B to futuristic hip-hop, his style is rooted in Congolese rumba, the ubiquitous sound of The Democratic Republic of Congo. With his new full-lenght album, MAKANDA at The End of Space, the Beginning of Time, Pierre looks to build on the success of his debut. Produced entirely by Seattle-based Fly Guy Dai (aka Tendai Maraire of Shabazz Palaces), this new album pivots from Bantou's housey thump to something more instrumental, incorporating strong African influence and old-school West Coast hip-hop vibes into Kwenders unique recipe.
