X92.9 Calgary's Alternative Xposure Presents: The Dears with Lou Canon and Evan Freeman live on March 13th at The Gateway!

The Dears emerged out of the early Noughties Canadian indie renaissance, cementing their orchestral-pop-noir sound with celebrated debut album End of a Hollywood Bedtime Story, in 2000. In 2001 and 2002, they released the EPs Orchestral Pop Noir Romantique and Protest, as well as a collection of unreleased songs, Nor the Dahlias. In 2003 they released their second full-length album No Cities Left, and a string of highly anticipated shows at SxSW '04 launched their international career. Gang of Losers was released in 2006, was well received by the press, and was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize. A tumultuous transitory period followed. The Dears emerged, stolid, with another meticulously crafted classic, Missiles (2008), followed later by Degeneration Street (2011) and Times Infinity Volume One (2016) and Times Infinity Volume Two (2017).

Singer and multi-instrumentalist Lou Canon has emerged as the vanguard of Toronto’s bedroom electronic movement. With her enveloping, downtempo music, Lou has created a vibe steeped in style and effortless mystique. Her album, Suspicious (co-producer Mark Lawson – Arcade Fire, Basia Bulat), was released via Paper Bag Records in 2017. This is music for nighttime; roiling drumbeats and breathily expressive vocals that lead you through the dark corners of your innermost subconscious. Lou’s intention for each song was “to leave the front door, go south at the end of block, across the freeway, over the toll bridge, through the antenna, riding the waves, beyond the horizon, rising in the hot air, falling like rain, and reverberating in that space between an eardrum and your imagination.” Suspicious does just this—its songs surround and transport the listener, beckoning them down a labyrinth of alluring and synthful beats.

Evan Freeman is a Calgary-based musician, singer and songwriter.

Evan's music evokes vast landscapes: prairie thunderstorms, soaring glacial peaks and post-apocalyptic skylines. His debut Luna wraps post-rock and shoegaze production around dreamy pop hooks, evoking Radiohead, Beach House, Sigur Rós and Ride.

Luna was described in the Calgary Herald as «a masterfully sculpted piece of pop-informed shoegazing wonderment» and was listed on the CBC Key of A's top ten albums of 2016.

In live performance Evan is joined by prolific local musicians Darren Young, Rauth Clement and Robin Cillo. The band has toured across Canada, including performances at the Calgary Folk Music Festival, Smithers Midsummer Festival, the West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg, 3030 Dundas in Toronto and Quai des Brumes in Montreal.

Evan is currently recording his second album, anticipated in 2019.
