Femme Fatale: A Celebration of Women in Music came about accidentally after an amazing response to a Facebook post asking for some of the favorites in female vocalists or female fronted bands in Alberta. Many of the women named expressed that they would love to play in a show together and who are we to deny them? Thus this show was born!
While there are sometimes negative connotations with the term Femme Fatale, we choose to focus on one of the original definitions: «a woman who attracts men by an aura of charm and mystery». Not only do these mysterious women in music attract men with their great talent, they attract women who love music and who love to support other women. While the music industry can be a difficult place to navigate, we want to focus on the women who are making names for themselves with their involvement in music.
This is the first of what we see as an annual event celebrating not only female vocalists, but female musicians as well. While we are focusing mainly on metal this year, we are looking forward to expanding into other styles of music in the future including punk, hardcore, rockabilly, stoner, doom, rock, alt-rock, funk and just about any other style of kick ass music women are involved in!
This show is brought to you by METALHEADS UNITED, The Celestial Agency, Celestia and 420 Music & Arts Festival in conjunction with Distortion — Live Music Venue and the Calgary Beer Core.
Here are some bits of information about the bands that are taking part in this event!
The Order of Chaos (Edmonton) Fronted by the amazing Amanda Kiernan, the Order of Chaos has been blazing up the metal scene for the last 12 years from Canada to Europe and beyond to China. With a solid base of extremely talented musicians, Amanda is a force to be reckoned with. With her soaring melodic choruses to gritty, in your face thrash she doesn’t let up for a moment. We are honored to have The Order of Chaos headline this event and look forward to hearing their new music from their upcoming EP.
Caveat (Calgary) was originally formed in 2002.They went through a couple different incarnations until they went into indefinite hiatus in 2008. Fast forward to 2013 when the band was asked by Big Nate, the creator of Calgary Metalfest, to reform to play the inaugural festival and the band obliged. That show would re-ignite the pilot light in the melodic, progressive metal furnace of the remaining members of Caveat and writing commenced in that style.
Caveat officially reformed at the end of 2014 making Matt Petti of Illuminated Minera a bonified member of the band. 2015 was spent wring new material & playing a handful of shows and several metal festivals. In early 2016 Amanda Marie Bourden joined the band on keyboards and female vocals and has added a fresh new dynamic to the band's sound.
Tessitura Official (Edmonton) Tessitura is a great band in their own right, but add Cyn Mercredi as the lead vocalist and this band just blows us all out of the water. Consistently named as many metal fans favorite female metal vocalists in Western Canada, Cyn will entrance you with her powerful screams and haunting growls. If you've never seen Tessitura, this is a great opportunity to see this great Progressive Death Thrash band.
Pervcore: It all started with drunk Emi and Terralee… they wanted a sex driven band with slave musicians that they could post to the stage and dominate. Things started off well, they got interested musicians. Some stuck around and some left, so thye added in more musicians and recorded their first album self titled Pervcore.
Some time went by and 3 members went off into their own direction so they kinda thought Pervcore was over, but it was just beginning.
With the addition of some killer new members, they carried on. If you've never seen Pervcore, you should come to the show and check them out, maybe have a cleavage beer, win sex toys of just get teenage girl drunk. You definitely don't want to miss the Bad Girls of Pervcore!
Trær (Calgary) Traer delves into the darker side of metal with their haunting grim black metal. One of the hardest working black metal bands in Calgary, they have a dedicated and large following in the underground metal scene in Calgary after only three years of existence. Nekrohermit's compelling presence on stage is hard to miss with her intensity and passion as bassist and her expansion to Black Speech-style vocals. This is one band you don't want to miss!
Breaking The Silent (Edmonton) Not even around 2 years, Breaking the Silent has crashed into the Alberta metal scene and made a name for themselves. A unique combination of Thrash, Power and Melodic Metal, Mar K is a perfect front woman for this band with her power and grace. We are especially excited to welcome Breaking the Silent to the Distortion stage for the first time.
THE WOMEN'S CENTRE OF CALGARY:
We are also excited to be working with the Women's Centre of Calgary! We will be helping out in the following ways:
1. We are collecting basic needs items for them.
2. We are having a silent auction with some really great items from bands, sponsors and vendors. All proceeds from the auction go to the Women's Centre.
3. Throw some money into the jar and that will also go to the Women's Centre!
If you're not sure what basic need items to donate, here is what the centre is looking for at this time.
Basic Need Items:
The Women’s Centre welcomes donations of Basic Need Items (Gifts in Kind) if they correspond to our current needs and if the Centre can benefit from the donations. In-kind giving is a donation of any non-cash product or good. While we cannot receive donations of clothing, furniture or household goods, as we have very limited space, we are currently in need of:
Diapers (size four and up)
