Barbara Sutherland, a fibre artist of Fountain Studio, makes hand crafted books from plant dyed papers, industrial felts and re-used book covers. Recently, she was a collaborator with governor general award winner, Richard Harrison, in the creation of a book work from his short story «Closing the Mouth of the War», part of the Print(ed) Word Project. PAPER THREAD AND GLUE: An Introduction to Book-Binding
This three day workshop will familiarize you with the basic materials (paper, board, thread and adhesives), and techniques (folding, sewing, glueing) to create simple books. You will make several types, including: Accordion books, Japanese stab bound books, a simple 2-signature book and a coptic bound book. You will also learn how to construct a portfolio box (half clamshell) to be used as a container for your books or prints.
